This is the part Christian patriarchy hates most: grief does not get to become a gag order. A family can mourn, and the people harmed by a man’s power can tell the truth about what that power did. Both can exist in the same room. Lindsey Graham’s legacy is not erased because someone loved him, and the people he helped wound are not required to perform reverence so the powerful can have a cleaner obituary. Silence has been sold as holiness for far too long. Sometimes the holy thing is the testimony nobody wanted spoken at the funeral.
What immediately came to mind when I read this was, “Hallelujah!” I’m not necessarily rejoicing in his death, but in the honesty and truth with which you wrote about his death; the reality of it for me and so many others. Thank you for this honest articulation of what his death means to many.
DEI is so important. Power must include diverse perspectives, voices and experiences. This country is a mess bc for too long the loudest voices were white republican men.
